A deep dive into sustainable waste management

Sustainability is at the heart of PMG’s operations, guiding our approach as a property partner of choice. We aim to build long-term partnerships with our tenants, offering more than just commercial spaces by providing solutions that foster environmentally responsible business practices. A key example of this is our partnership with Reclaim, New Zealand’s largest privately owned processor of recyclable materials. Since the 1970s, Reclaim has led efforts to divert valuable materials from landfills, playing a pivotal role in New Zealand’s circular economy.

Recently, we had the opportunity to tour Reclaim’s Auckland facility with some of our tenants, giving us unique insight into the recycling process. With a 150,000-tonne processing capacity, Reclaim manages a variety of recyclable materials, from paper and cardboard to co-mingled plastics. Seeing their operations firsthand reinforced the importance of effective waste management—not just for our tenants but for the future of businesses across New Zealand.

From collection to transformation

A common question we often hear is: "Where do recyclables actually go?" During our tour of Reclaim, we saw the full process unfold—from the initial collection to the transformation of materials into new products. Reclaim emphasised the critical role of source separation—ensuring that materials are correctly sorted at the point of disposal. This straightforward step allows businesses to dramatically enhance the efficiency and success of their recycling efforts. The image below highlights examples of how your recyclables are repurposed.

However, there are still challenges to overcome. Reclaim identified common contaminants, such as food waste or mixed plastics, which can lower the quality of recyclable materials. By implementing small but significant improvements in waste management practices, businesses can reduce contamination and greatly improve their sustainability outcomes.

Proactive waste management at PMG

At PMG, sustainability is more than just a concept—we measure it. Across our portfolio, we track waste streams with a clear goal: to divert as much waste as possible from landfills. In FY24, 37.84% of waste across the PMG portfolio was diverted from landfill to recycling, totalling an impressive 271 tonnes of recycled material. While this is a significant milestone, it’s just the start of our journey. We’re committed to working closely with our tenants to drive these numbers even higher.

A key benefit of our partnership with Reclaim is the educational component. Together, we host waste education sessions for our tenants, promoting sustainable waste practices and offering practical advice on reducing waste. These sessions empower our tenants to make informed decisions about their waste streams, contributing not only to environmental sustainability but also to long-term cost savings.

Property partner of choice

We take pride in being a property partner of choice, and our collaboration with Reclaim is just one example of how we support our tenants in their sustainability journey. Our focus is on enhancing the efficiency and performance of each property in our portfolio. This commitment not only fosters thriving environments for our tenants but also delivers significant cost savings and environmental benefits.

Our ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) programme has shown that sustainability is more than just a responsibility—it’s a strategic advantage. By integrating sustainable practices, we attract high-quality tenants, safeguard property values, and improve fund performance, ultimately delivering better returns for our investors.

Looking to learn more about sustainable waste management? Recycling Week is taking place from 21-27 October 2024.

Recycling Week was created and is administered by Reclaim. Reclaim’s ambitious goal is to educate and raise awareness on waste minimisation among 5 million New Zealanders nationwide. To bring Recycling Week to life in a fun way, they have decided to dress up the week with a theme – Back to Basics: focuses on understanding your waste as the first step towards a waste-free future.

PMG will be taking part in Recycling Week by e-waste recycling. We will introduce e-waste bins across several of our Auckland sites, managed by Reclaim, to encourage tenants to dispose of unwanted or non-functional electronic items in an environmentally responsible way.
